Back pain and pregnancy unfortunately seem to go hand in hand for a majority of pregnant women. While it can vary in it's intensity, most will find it uncomfortable enough to wonder what can be done to prevent it. Fortunately, there are quite a few things that can help you get a healthier back. You will find some tips to prevent back pain below.


Back pain and pregnancy can be positively impacted by adjusting your posture. Even normally, incorrect posture can create problems, but these are magnified when you are pregnant. As your belly grows, it pulls your center of gravity forward, and your lower back attempts to compensate by arching more and more. This places pressure on the vertebrae and discs of your lower spine, and causes pain. You can improve your posture simply by being mindful of it while walking, and making sure your lower back is supported while seated, and your feet are flat on the floor. Try to avoid standing for long periods, but if you must, try to rest one foot up on a box or stool to take the strain off of your lower pelvis.


Adjusting your sleeping position can also help alleviate back pain. Be sure to sleep on your side, with your knees drawn up a bit. Place a pillow between them to reduce pressure on the back. If you can, try to get a medium-firm mattress that provides support without changing the natural curve of your body.


Other tips to prevent back pain involve exercise. Your back usually hurts because your core muscles meant to support it are too weak. If you strengthen them, you can greatly reduce incidences of pain. Exercises like squats and rows help strengthen key lower back and abdominal muscles, taking pressure off of your spine. You don't need to do a lot just a few done consistently will bring results.


Useful tips to prevent back discomforts include making changes to your bending and lifting techniques. When bending over, always keep your back straight, and bend your knees instead. When lifting, make sure your legs are doing all the work, and keep any objects you are lifting as close to your body as possible. If anything seems too heavy, don't hesitate to ask for help.


Back pain and pregnancy can occur for other reasons as well. Sometimes the shoes you wear are not optimal for supporting your weight properly. Try using heel inserts to take pressure off of your back and absorb shock. Also try to avoid wearing high heels while pregnant. You can also make sure you are seated correctly while driving. Make sure your knees are higher than your hips, and that your elbows are comfortably bent while holding the wheel.


While back pain and pregnancy often seem to go together, the back pain is not inevitable. If you follow the tips to prevent back pain listed above, chances are you may not experience it at all, and if you do, it will be fairly minor.

Poor posture and weak neck and back muscles have been determined to be the main culprits that are responsible for chronic headaches and neck pain according to Santa Monica Chiropractor, Dr. Dean Goodman, D.C. In his thirty years of practice, Dr. Goodman has helped thousands of patients to recover from conditions that failed to respond to drugs and other forms of treatment. Dr. Goodman cites numerous studies that have concluded that Spinal Manipulation is recommended for neck pain and headaches, including troublesome migraine headaches. Several randomized controlled trials have been conducted to assess the efficacy of chiropractic adjustments and manipulation for neck pain using various methods. The result is neck and back tension that is relentless and and accumulative.


Impaired nerve signals and muscle fatigue and weakness lead to a variety of symptoms. Dr. Goodman has found that chiropractic care, especially when used in conjunction with strengthening exercises and postural awareness, can bring relief to patients suffering with neck pain, neck pain, headaches and joint pain. Low Back Pain Relief (ONE MOVE!)

Low back pain is one of the most common and debilitating injuries that can crush your workouts and progress. Anyone that has ever had a bad back can tell you just how quickly it can prevent you from working out at all, let alone with enough intensity to see gains. In this video, I show you a single exercise that you can use to start getting low back pain relief in the weeks ahead.

The key to this movement sequence is that it attacks the back pain at its source rather than at its location. Too often, people feel the pain in their back and look for treatments that treat that pain. This is not a good long term approach for beating the lumbar pain once and for all. All you are doing is temporarily treating symptoms when you do this. If you want to get rid of the pain in your back once and for all you have to figure out what is causing it in the first place.

Most of the time, all pain can be sourced to a joint either immediately above or below the site of the pain. In the case of the lower back, you would want to look at either the hips below or the thoracic spine above. In my experience as a sports physical therapist, I can tell you it’s almost always the hips (and glutes specifically) that aren’t doing their job and aren’t trained to work in concert with the muscles of the lower back that tends to lead to the breakdowns and resulting low back pain.

The muscles of the lower back just aren’t strong enough to handle the responsibility of the glutes as well. If you can get your glutes to start contributing in the way they are supposed to, you’ll see just how fast you can actually start treating your low back pain and get rid of it by strengthening the source of the problem.

Here I show you three individual exercises that you can use to progress through your lower back pain treatment. First, if you are not acutely injured but are dealing with a chronic low back issue and have pretty significant weakness in your lumbar paraspinals you would use just a band. As I demonstrate in the video, walk yourself into a squat rack with the band anchored across your path. Allow the band to push you back into a normal hip hinge. Overcome the resistance of the band by contracting your glutes and standing as straight up as you can to tie in thoracic extension as well.

Moving on, you can load the lumbar extensors a bit more (provided you have more strength) by adding in the RDL component of the exercises. Perform the same hip / glute extension as well as the RDL and you will feel a great co-contraction between the two muscle groups that would prefer to work together all along.

Finally, you can get thoracic spine strengthening as well by performing a bent row in the middle of each rep to really take your low back pain relief plan to the next level.

End Lower Back Pain: Stretch Routine that Ended 17 Years of Lower Back Pain






I injured my back on three separate occasions in the 90's, which caused me ongoing lower back pain for years after. Visits to chiropractors aggravated the issue, though the visits also started me in the right direction for recovery. I was eventually assigned a stretch routine, some of which I discarded due to discomfort. I whittled it down to a routine that worked for me, both in what it achieved and in how long it took to do. However, the initial routine never got rid of the pain. One morning, waking up particularly stiff and wondering what the hell I would be like in 10, 20, 30 years from now, I was seriously thinking I needed surgery. I visited a friend that evening, the one who had set me up with her chiropractor. I told her about the thought of surgery as the stretches I had been given weren't cutting it. I showed her what I was doing, and she suggested one more to add to my routine, and was surprised I hadn't been shown it by the chiropractor. The next day, I integrated her suggestion into the routine and the moment I did the movement she showed me, my back made a distinct pop-pop sound that has never happened again since, and my lower back pain was gone.

I have to do the routine laid out in this video every morning and evening. It is explained in the video, so no need to be redundant. It has kept me lower back pain free for 2 1/2 years as of this posting. I would think this would be a good routine for people who sit at a desk all day. My original injuries were while I was sitting at my drum set and reached down to raise the snare (1st injury, mid 90's), again when I reached to raise the tom (2nd injury, late 90's) and then the kicker in 2000, when I was lifting weights and turned to look at something while holding weights over my head. That time, my legs dropped out from under me and I did not have use of my legs, or anything below my waist, for 4 days and nights, followed by walking with crutches for a week, then a cane.

You’ve surely heard of placebos – they’re phony drugs that real drugs are tested against. But have you ever wondered how someone could be fooled into thinking they’ve received a powerful chemical compound when all they’ve been given is an inert sugar pill?

Placebos mean “I will please” in Latin and they take their name from mourners who were hired to be sad at funerals back in medieval times. The mourners were fake and the term eventually came to be applied to “fake” drugs.

Placebos became a standard component of the double-blind study, where participants are split into groups that either get the drug or get the placebo. The logic is that if the real drug elicits a stronger response than the fake drug (the placebo) then it’s proven successful. It works!

The thing is, some researchers noticed that a lot of people in double blind studies who received placebos still had positive reactions to them. As many as a 1/3 of all people respond favorably to placebos. And let’s recap here: Sick people are given fake drugs, and get better as a result. This isn’t supposed to happen.

So studies were launched to find out what was going on. One 2004 study in Michigan gave participants a painful but harmless injection in their jaws. Yow. Then they were given a saline injection they were told was a pain reliever. Saline has no pain relieving properties, hence it was a placebo injection. Astoundingly, the researchers found that the pain levels went down in EVERYONE IN THE STUDY following the injection! When viewed through a PET scan, the researchers found the participants’ brains had released endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers.

Because of the placebo, the people’s pain decreased not just in their minds, but in actuality.

Even more astounding is the nocebo effect: Not only can fake drugs and treatments produce a positive response, people can suffer from negative side effects from placebos too.

So what’s going on here? Well, researchers’ explanations typically fall into two camps: the subject-expectancy effect, where people know what the outcome should be and unconsciously conform to that expected outcome; and classical conditioning, like Pavlov’s dogs, but instead of salivating at a bell, we experience relief through what we think is a drug. The jury, however, is still out on what exactly is behind the placebo effect.

Ethically, there’s a wrestling match going on. On one hand, the idea that people can heal through the power of their own bodies rather than through powerful drugs that often have undesirable side effects is a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say. On the other, informing patients truthfully is a tenet of modern medicine and placebos require pretty much outright lying by doctors.

So what to do? Some clever physicians have figured out a loophole: They can offer a placebo as a cure to a patient, but tell them they’re not sure how the drug works. All that’s missing is the wink and the nudge.

When we were kids, I was the serious one, and my little sister was the fun one. I never dreamed that when we grew up, she would be the one who landed a solid career and a decent income first. As an x-ray technician, she works harder than most people I know. These are the reasons I'm proud to be her big sister:


1. My sister has mad skills.


When my sister enrolled in an x-ray technician program, I had no idea that she would acquire so many skills along the way. Not only can she name all the bones in the body, rattle off lists of creepy-sounding diseases, and lift people twice her size, but she can also operate some pretty complicated machinery. Her x-ray technician program taught her real, practical skills that directly applied to her future career.


2. She solves problems creatively at work.


My sister works with people who are often in pain or have mobility issues. After all, patients aren't usually sent to the x-ray technician because everything feels great. Often, she has to come up with ways to position people on the table who can't hold their limbs in the appropriate places. The other day, she was telling a story about something funny one of her coworkers said, In the middle of this story, she described how she propped up a patient who was in severe pain with sponges to get the x-ray she needed. This kind of problem-solving comes so naturally to her now, she doesn't even realize that what she does at work is the most interesting part of her story.

3. My sister can handle things that would make me barf.


When we were kids, my sister said, "Ew!" and "That's gross!" all the time. When she was in school to become an x-ray technician, my sister learned that she could handle just about anything. She saw operations during her clinical rotation and didn't freak out. She regularly sees grisly injuries and deals with it well. I won't go into too many details, but becoming an x-ray technician made my sister a much stronger person.


4. She and her co-workers are close.


When my sister goes out after work, she hangs out with the group of friends she's had since high school. But she also formed lifelong friendships with people who were in her x-ray technician program. Her co-workers are now her friends, and her boyfriend is also an x-ray technician. They form a unique group, and they all have a language all their own. It seems like so many people hate the people they work with, or at least feel nothing in common with them. But x-ray technicians definitely stick together.


5. She makes more money than me!


My sister and I took very different approaches to education. I figured that if I spent enough time in school, eventually I would end up in a stable career. My sister, on the other hand, wanted to get specific, hands-on training that would lead directly to work. Though she only has an associate degree and an x-ray technician certification, she makes more money that I do with a master's degree in writing. And while I love my life and the path I've chosen, I'm proud of my little sister and hope to someday do something that makes her as proud of me.

I told her the breakup had given me a fresh perspective. Of course the trick was to get her to call back and she did. I was really surprised she called back so quickly.


The next step was to get her onto the next step. I was hoping she would agree to go for a coffee with me. After coffee and lunch a few times she was starting to feel very at ease.


Next was to move onto a meal at a restaurant. Another small step. Moving to a meal from coffee would be small but easy step for her to take. Jumping from the phone conversation to the meal together was just too much to ask.


I think you probably realise the pattern now, small step after small step. Every little step should not be a stretch as she's feeling at ease by now. Now you can bring the next step into the game.


I used a number of these steps in my system to get my wife back. You plan may work different than mine and you may even manage it in fewer steps. The important thing is you have the step by step system to follow all the way.


I spent about 6 or 7 weeks on this getting my wife back stuff. I followed the system rules very closely. I think it was a great investment as it did exactly as it claimed it would.

The mechanical function of your spine is affected by the alignment, flexibility and strength of many parts of your body including:


• Foot, knee, leg alignment
• Muscle strength of legs, buttocks, back and abdominal wall

• Hip flexibility
• Position of the pelvis (tilted forward, back or to the side)
• Shape and flexibility of the lumbar (lower back) spinal curve
• Shape and flexibility of the thoracic (upper back) spinal curve
• Shape of the cervical (neck) spinal curve
• Shoulder carriage and mobility
• Position of the head in relation to the shoulders


Spinal Anatomy and Function


The arms, legs, chest all attach to the spine, via the shoulder girdle, pelvis and ribs. The weight of the head is perched on the end of the spine. Therefore, the spine affects and is affected by every movement your body makes. For example, if your head is not properly balanced, the natural curve of the neck becomes distorted. If the arms or legs don't have full range of motion, the spine must compensate by extra bending and twisting. Yoga helps people learn to maintain proper posture and spinal alignment throughout the day, placing less strain on the back and spine.


Muscles that Act on the Spine


Running parallel to your spine are the erector spinae muscles, deep muscles of the back that support the spine in the upright position. The erector spinae rotate the spine, bend it backward and sideways, and influence posture by helping create and maintain the proper spinal curves. If the erector spinae are too tight, they contribute to swayback. If they are too stretched out, they contribute to a flat back. If they are overworked, they can go into painful spasms. Yoga helps maintain back health by both stretching and strengthening the erector spinae.


The lower back is also significantly influenced by three sets of muscles that attach to the pelvis or the lumbar vertebrae: the hip flexors (which raise the thigh toward the chest), the abdominals, and the hamstrings (long muscles on the back of the thigh). These muscles can create a forward or backward tilt to the pelvis, leading to an increase or decrease in the lumbar curve. For example, because hip flexors attach to the front of the pelvis, tight hip flexors will tilt the pelvis forward, creating sway back. Tight hamstrings will tilt it backwards, creating a flat back. Weak abdominal muscles will allow the pelvis to drop forward and will fail to support the lumbar spine from the front. Yoga can help correct these problems by improving overall range of motion and flexibility.


Each of your joints is controlled by at least two sets of muscles: the flexors (which bend the joint) and the extensors, which straighten it. In addition, a number of joints have rotator muscles that twist, turn, or rotate the bones. Good posture can only exist when the flexors, extensors and rotators are in proper balance. But often the muscles acting upon a joint are out of balance. For example, the flexors may be tighter or shorter than the extensors, so that the joint can not be fully straightened; or the muscles that rotate the joint in one direction may be stronger than those that rotate it the other way. These unequal forces make the joint weaker and more vulnerable. Many people with back or neck pain suffer from imbalances of the flexors, extensors and rotators of the spine, arms and legs. With an intelligent program of stretching and strengthening (as with yoga) the muscle groups can be brought back into balance.

First, you must understand what causes the pain, and then just do a few simple exercises every day to help strengthen the muscles that will be instrumental in the prevention of this pain


As your belly swells throughout your pregnancy, you will find your center of gravity shifting to compensate for the extra weight pulling you forward. To accomplish this, your back will begin to arch more and more, compressing the vertebrae and discs of the lumbar spine. This doesn't need to go on very long before you will find yourself experiencing back pain. Fortunately, preventing back pain during pregnancy is not too difficult, as long as you diligently perform exercises that strengthen the correct muscle groups.


The most important group of muscles to strengthen when preventing back pain during pregnancy is known as the ore group. These muscles were meant to support your spine and stabilize your pelvis, but if they become weak, then other body parts, like your lower back, try to compensate, often resulting in back pain. If you perform the exercises below, you will strengthen your core muscles and take pressure off of your lower back.


The first exercise you can do is called a row. Place your feet slightly wider than your hips, bend your knees, and push your bottom out so you are in a squat position. Bend over from the waist so your torso is parallel to the floor. Using small dumbbells, perform a rowing movement, bringing the dumbbell up towards your ribs, and repeat this 6-10 times. Another exercise is squats. Place your feet slightly wider than your hips and turn them outward slightly. Lower yourself into a sitting position, and then squeeze your bottom together as you return to a standing position. Repeat this 6-10 times as well.


A few more exercises are the bird dog: Get on all fours, with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips. Keeping your back flat, extend opposite arms and legs into the air, and then repeat on the other side. Or, you can try a hip bridge. Rest your head and neck on a birthing ball, with your hips pushed into the air. Drop your hips to the floor, then raise them back up, using your bottom to push. Repeat both of these exercises 6-10 times.


Preventing back pain during pregnancy is really quite simple if you perform these simple exercises daily. They are all specifically designed to strengthen your core muscles. As always, check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. Back pain can be unpleasant and even debilitating, but if you start these exercises early in the pregnancy, you may never have to experience it.
